Episode #56: We’re Not Like Everybody Else, So Don’t Talk Back

Saturday, January 25th, 2014

Except for one song in Gibberish everything this week is in English, except for the instrumentals but they were performed by well-known English-speaking people. It’s a good choice. British invaders, folk legends, pop legends, showbiz legends, Flanders and Swann, pop instrumentalists, jazz instrumentalists, hard-to-pronounce artist names and song titles, the first solo album by a Beach Boy, favorites of ours and now yours.

We do our best for you and you know it. Tell your Ma, tell your Pa. They’ll like it too.

Episode #55: We Want to Do Right but Not Right Now

Saturday, January 18th, 2014

This week we have too many women, too much movie music, and too much of a good thing. After a few introductory male performers it’s girls all the way except for a few token boys in the background. What were we thinking? Earl-Jean, Amy Winehouse, Hayden Panettiere, Jewel, Piaf…but let’s stop there, you can read the playlist yourself.

There should be less whining next week.

Episode #54: We’ll Just Smile and Wave at the Engineer

Sunday, January 12th, 2014

In tribute to Phil Everly we open this week with the Everly Brothers plus four covers of the same Everlys tune. We move on to songs by Kirsty MacColl, a duet by Frankie and Elvis, and songs by Rosie and by Minnie Riperton. Herbie Mann soothes, Rick Ross hustles, Bob and Doug McKenzie provide gift advice, and Karen Carpenter is covered (but not channelled). We conclude our amicable relationship with Kent Cigarettes, Blossom refuses to dance with us, GBV sing, Billy Murray stammers, and the original Broadway cast of Annie tell us how to dress. All that, and then Harry Nilsson sings one of our favorite TV themes.

It’s such a jam-packed episode that you’d better get started on it right away. Tell your friends and neighbors, too.

Episode #53: Just Like the Eighth Grade

Saturday, January 4th, 2014

We conclude our German adventure with selections from the Comedian Harmonists and from Dr. Strangelove. Everything else is in English (sorry). You’ll hear Edgar Bergen and Beth Sorrentino, two singers named Carla B., faux-Renaissance, indie pop, traditional and untraditional folk, more cover tunes, and still more, but now we’re out of breath.

We’re back to the real, safe, comfortable world next time.
