Episode #3: Chopped Murray

Friday, November 30th, 2012

For Rebecca's birthday we present a show with nothing birthday-themed at all, unless you count the title "Chopped Murray" which is the name of the salad with which we started her birthday meal. We didn't understand the reference and neither will you and we left the mystery alone and so should you.

We start this week with some MASSIVE PARTY HITS and drift into older and comforting Brill Building material from then and from now, throw in a little Bob and Ray, play a request (we're getting requests!), change languages once or twice, descend into the acoustic, and we go out to the soothing sounds of a Scottish bingo caller.

We have so much music here, it's almost enough to start a radio station.

  1. Republica — Ready to Go
  2. Joan Jett and The Blackhearts — Cherry Bomb
  3. Baracuda — Ass Up
  4. Lil’ Kim featuring 50 Cent — Magic Stick
  5. Kramer — Cherry Cherry
  6. The Drifters — Up on the Roof
  7. Carole King — Take Good Care of My Baby
  8. Beach House — You Came to Me
  9. Bob and Ray — Bob and Ray Honor City
  10. The Hotrats — (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)
  11. Rita-Rita — Je suis down
  12. Le Tigre — My Metrocard
  13. The Red Clay Ramblers — Run Sister Run
  14. Mimi and Richard Farina — Reno Nevada
  15. Angela McCulloch — Bingo Blues

Episode #2: Black Friday

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

On the day after Thanksgiving (in our family a day for haircuts) we present another episode of "Full Duplex", recorded and edited—yes, we needed to edit —and posted in only about two hours, which shows that we're starting to get the hang of this, but only just.

We present music by artists of many colors, most of those colors being black.

We're making it up as we go along, which is how all the best radio programs are done. And many other radio programs.

So far we've only played things that at least one of us likes (usually both) but we make no guarantees.

  1. Bob Dylan — Buckets of Rain
  2. The Handsome Family — Famous Blue Raincoat
  3. Bob and Ray — Salute Honor City, name missing
  4. Barbra Streisand — Miss Marmelstein
  5. Quincy Jones — Soul Bossa Nova
  6. Barbara Lewis — Baby, I’m Yours
  7. Ann-Margret — I Just Don’t Understand
  8. Chaka Khan — Diamonds Are Forever
  9. The Walter Gruener Kappelle — Brienzer Biirli
  10. Julie London — I’d Like You for Christmas
  11. Richard Thompson — Oops, I Did It Again
  12. Nina Gordon — Straight Outta Compton
  13. J. Arel — Dreamy Party (from "The Prisoner")
  14. Angelo Badalamenti — Audrey’s Dance (from "Twin Peaks") (abridged)

Episode #1: Start as We Mean to Go On

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

"Playing DJ" is something that I've always loved doing: you and the person you're playing with put on a virtual radio show for yourselves, alternately playing music for each other. I did this for years with my brother Steve who has had a very successful career in the radio and TV business. (Coincidence? I think not.) And then I did it for years with my daughter Rebecca who now has a successful career of her own in TV production. (Coincidence? Most definitely not!)

It's still fun and it has occurred to us that it would be even more fun to do this for a larger audience. Not everyone will share our musical tastes, but so what? Some will.

And so we present the oddly-named "Full Duplex", a podcast and sometime-broadcast in which R and R (Ron and Rebecca, or Rebecca and Ron) play music for each other, and now for you too. When we get the kinks worked out we'll be doing it live, simultaneously from our separate "virtual studios" in NJ and in Brooklyn (guess which one of us is the Brooklyn hipster). But to start with we'll put together shows when we happen to be in the same place together. (So I guess we're not actually starting as we mean to go on, are we?)

Here is our first offering, a "test" show that we did a few months ago (18 August 2012). We could clean it up but we won't for now. To help you decide whether you'd like to listen or just move along to the next podcast, we present our playlist. And we always will.

  1. The Allman Brothers Band — Little Martha
  2. Dr Hook and The Medicine Show — The Cover of “Rolling Stone”
  3. Fleetwood Mac — Oh Well (Part 1)
  4. Pickin’ on Led Zeppelin — Black Mountainside
  5. Shania Twain — Up!
  6. The Sundays — Here’s Where the Story Ends
  7. The Weepies — All That I Want
  8. Esquivel — Take the "A" Train
  9. Annette Funicello — Tall Paul
  10. Connie Francis — Where the Boys Are
  11. Elli Medeiros — A Bailar Calypso
  12. Donovan — Goo Goo Barabajagal (Love is Hot)
  13. Ada Jones and Billy Murray and the American Quartet — Come Josephine in My Flying Machine
